About Us
Fairy Godmothers is a program that serves area high school teens who might not otherwise be able to afford a prom dress and accessories. Through donations of new and gently used formal dresses and accessories, we are able to turn dresses into dreams for students in our community.
The mission is quite simple - to make sure that every young lady in the community has the opportunity to experience their high school prom feeling like a princess and that they are the most important in the world if only for that moment. Self-esteem and inner strength is what we advocate for each and every young lady by providing them with a personal shopper and a "Cinderella" like experience at our annual Prom Dress Fair.
History
Rene Spallina and Cynthia Jackson founded The Fairy Godmothers of Rochester in 2004 after seeing a story on Oprah about a program that provided prom dresses for financially challenged high school girls. Over the years, Cynthia moved from the area and Mara Axelrod stepped in to support the organization. Since then, the Fairy Godmothers of Rochester has dressed an average of 500 young women a year across more than 200 high schools and special programs in the Upstate New York region and beyond.
Inspired by these amazing women and the impact the organization has had on the Greater Rochester Community, Ami Salzman and Lynne Fiero hope to continue their mission and ensure that the program continues not only to thrive, but grow. Our goal is to make sure that every young lady that wants to attend prom has the opportunity to do so no matter what her personal or financial hardships.
